OTHER BOARD CERTIFICATION

Don't be fooled by other other board certifications. The "American Board of Cosmetic Surgery" and "The American Board of Cosmetic Facial Surgery" are not recognized by American Board of Medical Specialties, which is the only organization that regulates medical specialties and oversees certifying examinations. This organization recognizes plastic surgery as a separate and distinct medical specialty, and has empowered its component organization, The American Board of Plastic Surgery, to establish criteria for training and certification. The other boards mentioned above, have very little criteria for membership other than the fee required to print the certificate. No legitimate plastic surgery board has the word "cosmetic" in it. Physicians who are "certified" by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery are forbidden by California state law to advertise that they are "Board Certified".

The Symbol of Excellence in Plastic Surgery® designates plastic surgeons who are Members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Plastic Surgeons who display this Symbol are certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery® or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. They are dedicated to the highest standards of patient care and continuing development of professional skills and competence.
