Matthew L. Romans, MD, FACS

What Qualifies a physician to be a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon?

In order to be Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a physician must pursue a rigorous course of surgical training after medical school. This includes three to five years of surgical training, followed by a minimum of two years of Plastic Surgery training. The physician must then pass two examinations before he can be Board Certified.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only Board approved by the
American Board of Medical Specialties for passing on the qualifications for
the exclusive practice of plastic surgery.

Dr. Romans has TWO board certifications by the American Board of
Medical Specialties (www.abms.org).
1. American Board of Plastic Surgery (www.abplsurg.org)
2. American Board of Surgery (www.absurgery.org)

Dr. Romans is also a full member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in the world. Founded in l93l, the society is composed of board-certified plastic surgeons who perform cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

The mission of ASPS is to advance quality care to plastic surgery patients by encouraging high standards of training, ethics, physician practice and research in plastic surgery. The society advocates for patient safety, such as requiring its members to operate in accredited surgical facilities that have passed rigorous external review of equipment and staffing. The society works in concert with the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (PSEF), founded in 1948, which supports research and educational programs for plastic surgeons.

The American Society of Plastic SurgeonsOnly members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons may display the ASPS logo. This symbol of excellence in plastic surgery is what to look for when deciding on a surgeon. It tells you that you are choosing a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
